Pine Cemetery

Pine Cemetery Association

Laying just south of the Armstrong Mountains in the northern part of Coal County, Oklahoma is the Pine Cemetery. The cemetery was given its name from Pine Creek which runs along it to the north. National Highway 75, during in early statehood, ran along north edge of the cemetery. The highway has since been moved and the cemetery now is just � mile off the Pine/Legal Road, 2 � miles east of Highway 75. It was once known as the Rogers Cemetery until statehood and the opening of the Pine Post office.

The oldest marked tombstone is Larkin Prestridge, Born: 19 April, 1891 Died: 18 Feb., 1899. The oldest person buried is Charles Poulter at the age of 96. There are many unmarked graves and a few markers with partial markings. It is believed the northeast of the cemetery holds several Native American Indian graves but there is nothing to prove this.

The first acre of ground was donated by William Anderson Self and Martha Self on Aug.11, 1913. A dedication plaque hangs on the main gate. A dedication for the new gate and main archway was held on May 11, 2006. Materials and welding were donated by Heavybilt Manufacturing in Coalgate, Oklahoma. On June 28, 2009 a new fence was completed which has changed the appearance of the cemetery. Clearing of trees that were damaged in past ice storms has improved the land.

The cemetery is divided into sections A, B, C, D, and E. Sections A, B, and C lay north of the main gate and sections D and E lay south of the main gate. The rows are numbered from the west to east. The plots are numbered from north to south of each section. Due to the unusual layout of the north part of the cemetery it is impossible to get straight rows. Each tombstone is identified by Section, Row, and Plot Number.

Through generous donations of family members and friends, damaged trees and debris were cleared away and new fence was built. The old fence had been there for 50+ years. If anyone has any information on when the old fence was built, who built the fence,or any information on the old Highway 75 that run north of the cemetery, please contact one of the Association Board members.
