Helen K. Grotheer Daugherty, 89, a former resident of the Cushing community, died Sunday morning, April 8, 2012 at her home in Gaston, Oregon.
She was born August 10, 1922 in Cushing, Oklahoma, the daughter of the late Theodore and Emma (Jageler) Grotheer.
She was raised and received her education in the Cushing community.
She was united in marriage to Walter H. Smith, in Cushing, Oklahoma. Following their marriage they resided in the Avery community. They later divorced.
Helen was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Daugherty in 1965. Following their marriage they resided in the Cushing community until 1969, when they moved to Gaston, where they have resided since. Robert preceded her in death in 2001, after celebrating their 36th Wedding Anniversary.
She started working for Carlton Nursery in 1971 and worked there until their closing. She then worked as a store clerk for Ace Hardware in Forest Grove for 33 years until her retirement in 2005.
Among her special interests she enjoyed gardening, caring for her flowers, puzzles and her two cats “Cry Baby” and “Funny Face.”
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Emma Grotheer, and her infant brother, Alfred, brother in law Leon Jones, daughters in law Donna Smith and Sarah Smith.
Survivors include her sons and a daughter-in-law, Gene Smith, of Lubbock, Texas; Gary Smith, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Dale and Jeannine Smith of Forest Grove, Oregon; and her two sisters, Evelyn Jones, of Cushing, Oklahoma; and Dorothy Stevens, of Owasso, Oklahoma.
Also surviving are her five grandchildren, Emma Smith, of Forest Grove, Oregon; Sara Smith, of Tigard, Oregon; Patricia Byers, of Lubbock, Texas; Pamela Betz, of Lubbock, Texas; and Matthew Smith of Tucson, Arizona; and her four great grandchildren, Alicia, Amanda, Angela, and Madison.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday April 28, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. in the Memorial Chapel of the Davis Funeral Home with Pastor David Helmer officiating.
