BETTY JOYCE BARNES

Betty Joyce Barnes, passed away at her home on Friday, January 26, 2018. A visitation will be held from 6:30pm to 8:30pm on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at Strode Funeral Home. A Celebration of Betty's Life, will be held 2:00pm Friday at the First Baptist Church in Stillwater, Oklahoma. A reception will immediately follow in the Fellowship Hall. A Graveside will be at Fairlawn Cemetery.

Betty was born to Charles Oscar and Jennie Ethel (Stephens) Nuckolls, on July 12, 1927, in Enid, Oklahoma. When her four older brothers heard they had a sister, they ran around the neighborhood, exclaiming, "We have a Sister”!!! She grew up in a loving Christian home, during the Great Depression.

Three years later, her father, who was a civil engineer for the Frisco Railway, was transferred to Sapulpa, Oklahoma. For a short time, they lived in Granby, Colorado, where her Father's parents lived. In 1932, they moved back to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Betty received her early education, graduating from Central High School, in May 1945, just as World War II was coming to an end.

Along with two of her close friends, Betty enrolled in Oklahoma A. & M. College in 1945, in Stillwater, OK. In the fall of her sophomore year, she met the 'Love of her life', a Stillwater boy named Bob. Easter weekend in Tulsa, he gave her his fraternity pin. The following spring, they became formally engaged on April 18th, 1947. They celebrated the occasion at their Junior Senior Prom, in Gallagher Hall, where Harry James played for the occasion. They liked to call it their own 'Engagement Party'!

Betty & Bob were married on July 20, 1947 in the Second Presbyterian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They honeymooned at Rockaway Beach at Lake Tanneycomo, in Missouri, and established a home in Stillwater, Oklahoma. They were blessed with three children, Larry Allen, Beverly Gayle, and Robert Warren. They joined the First Baptist Church where Betty worked in the nursery, helped in the children's Sunday School, and Vacation Bible School. She loved singing Hymns at church and, enjoyed helping and even being a Den Mother for Rob & Larry in Boy Scouts, and helping with Beverly in Brownies. She sewed some for herself, many beautiful dresses, dance outfits, and later Bride's maids’ dresses for Beverly and a few others.

Her hobbies were traveling, reading, sewing, geology, singing, playing bridge, writing skits, and sometimes performing in them for her PEO sisters and other groups, and dancing to 40's and 50's music. She enjoyed traveling with her husband all over the United States to Canada, Novia Scotia, Alaska, England, Scotland, Ireland and the Bahamas, as well as many other places. She enjoyed flying with Bob in their own plane, on family trips with the kids. Their summers were spent in the beautiful mountains of Colorado, where they built their own cabin and enjoyed many years, with family and friends. Betty was also very involved in the Alpha Delta Pi sorority, continuing till recent years. And, of course, one of her greatest joys was in watching her Grandchildren grow up and attending their baseball games, and the births of her Great Grandchildren!

Betty was predeceased by her parents; four brothers, Bob, Dick, Jimmy and Don Nuckolls; one son, Larry Barnes.

She is survived by her husband, Bob, of the home; daughter, Beverly and husband, Jim Campbell; one son, Rob Barnes, all of Stillwater; grandchildren, Bryce, Scott & Camey, Todd & Autumn Campbell, and Kelsey Black all of Stillwater; Eleven great grandchildren, Callie, Cole, Cyah, Case, Peyton, Callen, Kendrie, and Duke Campbell, and Avery, Evyn, and Parker Black, all of Stillwater; nephews and nieces, Debbie, Steve, & Mark Nuckolls & families all of Tulsa, Carol Ann Henry, of Florida, and Bobby, Birmingham, AL, and Jack, Jeanne, Tommy, and families; many dear friends.
