The springhouse pictured here was originally built and used by Lewis Ross in 1844, the father of John Ross. He was a very prominant member of the Cherokee Nation who helped establish the first salt works in Indian Territory and the first non-commercial oil well in 1859. In 1873, the property was obtained by the Cherokee Nation to use as an orphanage in 1873. The orphanage also used the springhouse. The house was destroyed by fire in 1903, but the spring house remains. On top of being historically important, this spring house is one of the oldest constructions in Oklahoma.
