The youngest of 8 children, Fred was born to James and Viola (Rutz) Alexander in Longdale, Oklahoma on June 18, 1935 and went to be with Jesus on July 8, 2020, at the age of 85. His mother lived just the few months following Fred's birth, and upon her death, he went to stay with his aunt and uncle (Christ and Emma Schuber). Fred grew up on their farm south of Okeene, Oklahoma. He began his education in a nearby one-room school and then attended Okeene Public Schools through his Junior year. He moved to the Canton, Oklahoma farm to be with his Dad and step-mother, Mae (Hughes) Alexander during his senior year, graduating from Canton High School in 1953. Fred fell in love with and on September 27, 1953, married his high school sweetheart, Twila Sanderson.
Other than a short stay in Colorado, Fred and Twila made their home in the Canton community. Fred knew the importance of hard work and provided well for his wife and 2 daughters - tending to both the Alexander and Sanderson farms, as well as retiring from U.S. Gypsum Company and then serving as Canton's City Superintendent. Other "hats" he wore included working on the railroad, butchering (a skill his Dad taught him) and working for the cable company. Fred enjoyed serving as a Canton volunteer fireman and EMT worker. Fred was an active member of the believers meeting at Canton Christian Church, where he helped construct the new additions. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends as well as summer camping vacations in Red River, NM. Fred knew how to love people well, and because of that, he was well loved and respected.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers - James and Ray Dean, 3 sisters - Lola Enlow, Elnora Gillum and Darlene Alexander and an infant grandaughter. Fred is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years - Twila, 2 daughters - Cheryl (Calvert) Martin, Enid, OK and Jan (Mike) Shaw, Nashville, TN, 4 grandchildren - Gere (Jose) Acevedo, Emerald Isle, NC; Cedric (Pon) Shaw, Nashville, TN; Cory (Mary) Martin, Broken Arrow, OK and Calie (Cody) Taylor, Tulsa, OK, 8 great-grandchildren - Cristian, Evan and Zenash Acevedo; Brody, Milly and Preston Shaw; Penelope and Silas Martin, two sisters, Dorothy Caulk of Hennessey, OK and Ellen Henley of Pond Creek, OK, and many dear nieces and nephews who remember him affectionately as "Uncle Freddie".
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 13, 2020 at the Canton Christian Church with Pastor Josh Gores and Pastor Michael Grigsby officiating. Interment will follow at Fountain Cemetery west of Canton under the direction of Pierce Funeral Home, Canton, Oklahoma. Memorials may be made to Canton Christian Church through the funeral home at P.O. Box 36, Canton, OK 73724.
