Ernest E. "Sport" Harper, a resident of Mead, Oklahoma passed from this life at his home on Monday, October 19, 2015 at the age of 95 years, 8 months and 22 days.
He was born on Wednesday, January 28, 1920 in Calera, Oklahoma to James Alexander and Lenora Jane Williams Harper.
He married Helen Wyvette Canard in Kingston, Oklahoma on January 5, 1944. She preceded him in death on May 13, 2003.
Sport farmed over 80 acres in Calera, Oklahoma while growing up, eventually he moved to Borger, Texas and worked for Phillips Petroleum for 20 years. In 1970 he moved to Mesquite, Texas and worked for Dr. Pepper in Dallas as head of the maintenance department until he retired in 1983. Sport moved back to Oklahoma and reopened his father-in-law's blacksmith shop in Mead.
Mr. Harper is survived by his daughter, Cindy Ross and husband James of Denison, Texas; granddaughters, Suzanne Graves Mesneak and husband Alan of Fritch, Texas and Karen Graves Smith of Durant, Oklahoma; great-grandchildren, Kayla Smith of Silo, Oklahoma, C.J. Smith of Silo, Oklahoma, Dustin May of Justin, Texas and Baieigh May of Fritch, Texas.
Mr. Harper was preceded in death by his parents, James Alexander and Lenora Jane Harper; wife, Wyvette Harper; brothers, Merle, Ryburn, Garnett, Bill, Delmo and Lupe and sisters, Lillian, Vivian, Loretta and Oleta.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at the Highland Cemetery Chapel in Durant with Bro. Kerry Groce officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Day, A. G. Alexander and Philip Kinney.
