Graveside funeral services was held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 2, 2009 at the Mooreland Cemetery for Melville James "Med" Holloway with the Reverend Tom Marcum officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home, Mooreland.

Melville James Holloway was born in Haskew, Woodward County, Oklahoma on October 29, 1918, he passed away in Woodward, Oklahoma on December 29, 2008 at the age of 90.

Melville was the son of Alvie Newton and Anna Myrtle (Griffiths) Holloway of Haskew, Oklahoma. Melville spent his youth working on the family farm and in the family owned store, the Midway Store and Ice House, in Haskew. Melville attended school in Freedom and Mooreland. After graduation from high school, Melville went to work as a cowboy in Kay County, where he met his future bride, Dorothy Lee Salley. Melville and Dorothy were married by the minister of the Methodist Church of Woodward, on August 25, 1939.

Melville and Dorothy moved to Seattle, Washington where they both worked in the naval shipyards during World War II and enjoyed the birth of the first two of their four children. In the mid 1940?s Melville and Dorothy moved with their family to Los Angeles, California. Melville worked as a welder in the Pacific Bridge and Iron Works Shipyard during the war. After the war, Melville worked as a welder for the Lubrifiner Corporation. Melville also owned and operated two Rio Grande Service Stations in the Los Angeles area, sold Rambler automobiles and eventually settled down selling insurance for the National Life and Accident Insurance Company, retiring in 1978.

Upon retirement, Melville and Dorothy left city life and returned to Mooreland, where they resided until the time of their death. Melville enjoyed fishing, farming, playing cards, and working with his hands. Although he had polio as a child, it never slowed him down. While living in California, Melville was a long-time member of the Optimist International service organization where he served in many posts, including Lieutenant Governor of California.

Melville was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, five sisters, Violet Williams, Dora Lyons, Nora Burns, and Velma Hughes, Vertabelle Felton and his three brothers, Ray Holloway, Heber Holloway, and Myrle Glen Holloway.

He is survived by two sisters Clara Stout and Opal Evans, his four children, Lee Holloway of Mooreland; Myrle Holloway of Cerritos, California; Marion Holloway of Yukon; and Michelle Fleming of Aliso Viejo, California, seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Optimist International with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
