ARNOLD DUANE HASKINS

June 13, 1934 - February 7, 2018

Arnold D. Haskins, 83 year old Mooreland resident, died Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at his home in Mooreland surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 10, 2018 at the First Baptist Church of Mooreland with Reverend Gaylon Cox and Reverend David Houchin officiating. Burial will follow in the Mooreland Cemetery with the United States Army providing military graveside rites. The family will receive friends at the Billings Funeral Home in Woodward on Friday from 5:00 pm until 7:00 p.m. Visitation at the Billings Chapel in Mooreland will be held on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Arnold Duane Haskins was born to Admiral Vorice and Ruby Meryle (Munsell) Haskins on June 13, 1934 at the family home north of Mooreland, Oklahoma, where he grew up along with his siblings Lester, Eda Faye, Merita, and Dale Haskins. Graduating from Mooreland High School in 1952, Arnold went on to work construction traveling around building grain elevators. It was during a stint in Enid, Oklahoma where he married his bride of 62 years, Vera Lou Weatherman on May 1, 1955 at the Elm Grove Assembly of God Church in Chester, Oklahoma.

Arnold’s job took them to Dallas and later to Houston. From there, Arnold attended a mechanic’s school in Nashville, Tennessee. His first mechanic job landed them in Haysville, Kansas. In 1956, he was drafted into the United States Army and attended basic training in Fort Hood, Texas where their first son was born, Vance Duane in 1957. Arnold was stationed in Friedburg, Germany where he served for two years. During that time, their daughter, Penaloth Candith was born two and half months early and only survived two days. He returned to the states to work in Wichita, Kansas. During that time, their second son, Max Lane was born in 1959. In 1961, Arnold and his family returned to Mooreland and he soon went to work for Carl’s Machine Shop in Woodward, working there until May of 1975. He then began working at American Natural Resources and remained until his retirement in 1995. While living in Mooreland, their son Tony Clint was born in 1963 and daughter LuSinda Jayne in 1966.

Arnold served on the Mooreland School Board for several years and loved watching the Mooreland Bearcats various sporting events through the years. He also served faithfully as a Deacon at Mooreland First Baptist Church for many years. He loved his church, community, and the closeness of his family. He cherished his time with each of his siblings. Arnold, Lester, and Dale would work every summer cutting hay and harvesting even up until this last summer. His sister, Merita would regularly work alongside him to help prepare all of the Christmas goodies he put out every year for his family.

In 1966, while living on the farm north of Mooreland he started running cattle. In 1975, he moved his family into the house that he built in town. In 1989, he inherited his 80 acres northwest of Mooreland and upon retiring, in 1995 he took great pride in working with his cattle and loved taking care of them. Throughout his battle with cancer Arnold was steadfast to tend to his cattle, even until the last week of his life he ventured out to check them.

On the morning of February 7, 2018 Arnold woke up to see the face of Jesus. His greatest struggle was the thought of leaving behind those he loved so dearly. With his passing, his beloved wife and family rejoice in the eternal joy that Arnold is now experiencing and rest in the promise of one day being beside him around the Throne. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Eda Faye Yauck, daughter Penaloth Candith, son-in-law Shawn Ray, and sister-in-law, Janice Haskins.

He is remembered by his wife Vera Lou of the home, siblings Lester and wife Glenda Haskins of Mooreland, Merita and husband Dan Parsons of Woodward, Dale Haskins of Woodward; his children: Vance Haskins and wife Dee of Binger, Max Haskins and wife Kayla of Burleson, Texas, Tony Haskins and wife Janet of Woodward, and his daughter LuSinda Spann and husband Matt of Enid; 13 grandchildren: Josh Haskins and wife Jennifer, Jessica Bointy and husband Clayton, Adrianne Haskins, Allie Haskins, Aidan Haskins, Tyson Smith and wife Jamie, Danny Smith, Shawn Haskins, Jacob Haskins, Paul Spann, Karrington Swadley and husband Tyler, Lydia Goss and husband Colton, and Caleb Spann; 13 great-grandchildren: Karlee, Payton, Jace, Casen, Cooper, Chloe, Ty, Jaxon, Adalynn, Lily Grace, and one on the way; a host of nieces and nephews, as well as many friends that he was like a father too.

Memorial contributions my be made to the First Baptist Church of Mooreland with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
