Wallace Ray Howard, 91 year old Woodward resident, died Tuesday, February 24, 2015 in Woodward surrounded by his family. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 1, 2015 at the First Christian Church of Woodward. A private family burial will be held at a later date.
Wallace Ray Howard was born on the family farm on January 4, 1924, the only child of Ray and Vesta Howard of Selman. He graduated from Selman High School in 1942 and then attended Oklahoma A&M College in Stillwater until he volunteered to serve his country in World War II. Wallace served as a Radar Technician and Fire Controlman in the United States Navy aboard the Destroyer, the USS Purdy. After his honorable discharge, Wallace returned home and married his high school sweetheart, Doris Lee Adams on August 25, 1946. They shared 67 wonderful years together and had three daughters, Wallecia, Kandy, and Cynthia.
Wallace by trade was a farmer and rancher on the land he loved, his ranch “The Flying W Ranch”. But actually Wallace was a “Jack of All Trades”. He was a Master Welder, a skilled Carpenter, and an able Electrician.
In 1985, he and Doris Lee left the ranch and moved to Woodward where Wallace “farmed” his yard and garden on the hill. They found more time to enjoy traveling and spending time together.
Wallace held many offices, served on many committees and devoted a large portion of his life to service. Throughout his life he was active in the VFW, American Legion, Elks, the Harper County Excise Board, Oklahoma Cattleman’s Association, and the Harper County Farm Bureau. He was an Elder at the First Christian Church in Buffalo and then later at the First Christian Church in Woodward. He was a Founding Member of the Harper County Rural Water Corporation and also served in numerous capacities on the Oklahoma Rural Water Association and on the Executive Committee. Wallace won too many awards to mention them all. The last award was in 2010 for Distinguished Service to Oklahoma Agriculture given by the Oklahoma Farm Bureau.
He is survived by his loving wife, Doris Lee Howard of the home; three daughters, Wallecia Ream and husband Mark of Alva, Kandy Freeman and husband Dwight of Monte Vista, Colorado, Cynthia Storer and husband J.R. of Selman; he was the grandfather of five grandchildren, Ashlee Sneary and husband Steve of Alva, Karli Millspaugh and husband Brent of Littleton, Colorado, Zac Ream and wife Charleen of Alva, Weston Storer and fiance Andrea King of Forgan, and Dillon Storer and wife Janna of Waynoka. He was the proud great-grandfather of five: Cooper and Connor Sneary of Alva, Zane and Lawson Ream of Alva and McKenzi Storer of Waynoka; other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Vesta Howard and one granddaughter.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church with the Billings Funeral Home accepting the contributions on behalf of the family.
