A memorial service for Hazel Roberta Ward Wharton, 89, of Woodward, will be 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Tony Barros will officiate. A private family burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Arrangements are by Billings Funeral Home, Woodward. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
She was born Nov. 10, 1915, in Cordell to Ples and Carrie Smith Ward and died Wednes-day, Sept. 21, 2005, at Grace Living Center, Woodward.
She attended Watonga High School, graduating at age 16. She attended the University of Oklahoma, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in 1936.
She married Mel Wharton Nov. 27, 1938, in Watonga. They made their home in Geary, where they both taught school. They also lived in Custer, Blackwell, and Kingman, Kan., before moving to Woodward in 1969. She taught history at Woodward High School until she retired in 1980. He died Jan. 3, 2003.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school. She also was a member of Oklahoma Retired Teachers Association and Coterie Club.
Surviving are one daughter, Dr. Melinda Wharton of Atlanta; one sister, Dorothy Ward Eskridge of Tahlequah; and three grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mel, she was preceded in death by two brothers.
Memorials may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.
