John Dwight Van Dorn

July 10, 1934 ~ January 23, 2021

Dwight Van Dorn, 86 year old Woodward resident, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 23, 2021. Funeral services will be held at 2:00p.m. on Thursday January 28, 2021 in the Living Word Fellowship Church with a burial to follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

John Dwight Van Dorn was born on July 10, 1934 in Woodward, Oklahoma to John and Beulah (Parsons) Van Dorn. Dwight attended the Fern School House in Harper County until the 8th grade. He then attended Woodward schools, graduating from Woodward High School in 1951. He was united in marriage to Kay Frances Pappe on June 6, 1953 in Woodward, Oklahoma. They made their home in Woodward for one year, before moving to Manhattan, Kansas where Dwight worked at the C.K. Ranch. They returned to Woodward in the fall of 1955. In 1956, they started the Top Hat Drive In with Kayes father, Charles Pappe which later became the Sonic Drive In. In 1968, they moved to Edmond where they continued in the Sonic Drive In business. In 1970, they purchased a quarter horse farm in Edmond. In 1981, they moved back to Woodward to help take care of Dwights mother, Beulah. Kaye preceded him in death on January 7, 1997.

Dwight was a faithful member of the New Covenant Church. His spiritual life was very important to him. He was named an Oklahoma Junior Master Farmer in 1951. He served as the President of the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Association in 1980 and was the Director of the American Quarter Horse Association for six years.

Dwight was united in marriage to Peggy on April 21, 1999 in Amarillo, Texas. They made their home in Woodward and enjoyed farming together and spending time together.

He is survived by his wife Peggy Van Dorn; two sons: Mark Van Dorn and husband Mark Peterson, Martin Van Dorn and wife Sheri; one daughter, Keri Ward; grandchildren: Aaron Van Dorn, Andrew Van Dorn and wife Deidra, Nichole Fischer and husband Mike, Lindsey Pouncy and husband Mike, Jacob Van Dorn and fiance Caitlin Phibbs, Logan Ward, Tanner Ward and wife Jessica, Keridan Ward; great-grandchildren Avee Van Dorn, Auggie Van Dorn, Jillian Van Dorn, Josie Van Dorn, Tate Ward, Maddie Fischer, Steele Fischer, Wyatt Van Dorn, Wade Van Dorn, Weston Van Dorn, Zoey Pouncy, and Khloe Pouncy; Peggys children, Heath Noyes and Ashleigh McClung and husband Patrick; and Peggys grandchildren, Brendan Noyes and wife Celsey, Kadyn Noyes and wife Kaysha, Addyson Noyes, Lauren Noyes, Cailin McClung and Adelaide McClung: other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Kaye, brother Duane Van Dorn, nephew Bart Lawson, brother in law Kenneth Blair, and son in law Dan Ward .

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the New Covenant Church with Billings Funeral Home accepting contributions.
