Charles C. Rice, 93 year old Woodward resident, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2023 in Edmond. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 20, 2023 at the Woodward Church of Christ with David Heflin officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the United States Army. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.
Charles Clayton Rice was born on June 15, 1930 in Aylesworth, Oklahoma to Bruce Lee and Ora Emma (Duncan) Rice. Charles grew up in Aylesworth, Oklahoma (now underneath Lake Texoma) then he moved to Little City, Oklahoma when he was 12. He attended Aylesworth school and graduated from Madill High School. Charles was united in marriage to Belva Story on February 18, 1950 in Denison, Texas. They made their first home in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. Charles was inducted into the United States Army in 1952. He served in the 350th Infantry Regiment, Salzburg, Austria. He was honorably discharged after serving his country in 1954.
In 1957 Charles and Belva moved to Woodward for 30 days to work for Schlumberger. They never left, ending up making Woodward their permanent home. Charles worked for Schlumberger for 18 years, before he started Rice Weed Control in 1967, retiring in 2016. He and Belva owned Tots and Teens, a children's clothing store, from 1964 to 1994. They also had a second store for boys clothing, Rice's for a few years.
Charles was a member of the Woodward Church of Christ and he loved serving his church. He enjoyed drinking coffee with his friends and being with his family.
He is survived by his granddaughter, Ashley Soliday and husband Jeremy, grandson Chris Striplin; great granddaughters, Marley and Mercury Soliday, Callie and Western Striplin; sisters: Polly Maxey of Edmond and Wendy Whatley of Durant; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Lorene Jones and Christine Goff, brother Loyd Rice, his beloved wife Belva Rice, son Larry and daughter-in-law Debra.
