James E. Matthews, 69 year old Woodward resident, died Thursday, September 25, 2014 in an automobile accident near Beaver.. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 30, 2014 in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Jesse Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home. James Edward Matthews was born November 20, 1944 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas; he was the son of Cecil Coy and Ruby Alice (Brown) Matthews. He grew up in Gainesville, Texas. He was inducted in the United States Army in January of 1963 serving until February of 1966. He attained the rank of Specialist 5th Class and was awarded the air Medal 4th Oak Leaf Cluster (AFEM) Viet Nam, Sharpshooter and Expert M-60 Machine Gun. He was shot down three times. He attended three years of college in Hawaii while serving in the Army. In 1966, James was married to Venita Iris White in Clayton, New Mexico. They made their home in Perryton Texas and Woodward, Oklahoma. James was a truck driver for Robinson Brothers Trucking for J. D. Hodges, Jerry Pinkley, John Hensal and Mike Hensal as an escort. James loved hunting, fishing, cycle riding and golfing. He especially loved golfing and fishing with Michael, hunting with Rick, Jarrod and Josh and going to lake with his daughters and granddaughters. He was a life Member of the NRA. Survivors include his wife Venita of the home; one son Rick Randall and wife Candy of Sharon; two daughters Patsy Valentine and husband Lane of Weatherford, Texas; Brenda Lair and husband Randy of Weatherford, Oklahoma; two brothers, Coy Matthews of Fritch, Texas; Danny Matthews and wife Teresa of Canadian, Texas; two sisters, June Blevins of Sanford, Texas; Loretta Ross of Borger, Texas; Barbara Martin of Borger, Texas; grandchildren, Michael Valentine; Michelle Agan and husband Derek; Josh Randall, Christina Roberts and husband Chad; Miranda Buchanan and husband Alex; Jarrod Randall and wife Whitney; five great grandchildren, Abbagail, Callen, Tristan, Ryan and Aidan. He was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Matthews, Mother Ruby Matthews, two sisters, Birdie and Helen. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Disabled Vets with the funeral home in charge of donations.
