Steven Layne Martin

June 25, 1948 ~ October 16, 2020

Steven L. Martin, 72 year old Woodward resident, passed Friday, October 16, 2020 in Woodward. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 19, 2020 in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Shannon Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery with the United States Navy providing military graveside rites.

Steven Layne Martin was born on June 25, 1948 in Freedom, Oklahoma to Charles and Mary Lou (Robinson) Martin. He was reared alongside four brothers and two sisters in Freedom and in Woodward. Steve graduated from Mooreland High School in 1966. He attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University and studied Pharmacy.

He was united in marriage to Dian Sue Schmidt on June 1, 1969 at the First United Methodist Church in Woodward, Oklahoma. They made their first home in Woodward and later Norfolk, Virginia where they were blessed with children, Richard and Christi.

Steve was inducted into the United States Navy in 1970. He served his country as a Radioman and was honorably discharged in 1974. After his discharge the family moved back to Woodward where they were pleasantly surprised with the addition of son, Tim and they have lived here since that time.In Freedom,

Steve enjoyed showing animals. He was a member of the TKE fraternity while at Southwestern and later he enjoyed experimenting with photography, but most of all he loved being with his family.Steve proudly worked in heat and air for Fire & Ice, was a operator at WR Grace. He also helped his step-father, Dale Scott alongside his brothers, at D&S Construction. Ultimately Steve enjoyed his work in oil and gas as Field Operator for multiple Oklahoma gas companies, including Delhi Pipeline, Texas Oil and Gas and OneOK. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife Dian Martin of the home; two sons: Richard Martin of Norman, Oklahoma, Tim Martin of Sayre, Oklahoma; one daughter Christi Lason and husband David of Oklahoma City; two brothers: Rodney Martin of Woodward, John Martin of Woodward; sisters: Karen Bell and husband Ray of Woodward, Kathy Smitherman and husband Bob of Sublette, Kansas; one grandson, Matthew Martin of Edmond, Oklahoma; other relatives and friends.Steve was preceded in death by his father Charles Martin, mother Mary Lou Scott, step-father, LeeRoy Dale Scott, brothers, Roger and Phil Martin, grandparents, Hugh and Nan Robinson, Jessie and Harvey Martin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the WOOF Pet Rescue or the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, Cancer research with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
