MARTHA LOGAN

September 8, 1930 - April 21, 2018

Martha Harriett Snow Logan, age 87, died on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Woodward, OK.

A true hometown girl, Martha was born September 8, 1930, in Woodward, OK., to Lewis Leis Snow and Dora Clarissa Berry Snow.

Martha was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was baptized on August 11, 1939, in a pond at the home of her grandparents, Harriett Virginia Patton Berry and Thomas Nelson Berry, in Stillwater, OK. Years later when the Church was first forming in Woodward, meetings were held in her home. She loved learning and had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. She was a faithful daughter of God.

She attended Woodward schools through her sophomore year, active in Girl Scouts, Woodward Assembly of Rainbow for Girls, the Peppers, and Children of the American Revolution. In 1947, Martha enrolled at Rowland Hall Episcopal School for Girls in Salt Lake City, Utah, graduating in 1948 after completing her Junior and Senior years of high school. Following high school, Martha attended Oklahoma A&M, now known as Oklahoma State University, where she majored in art and humanities. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

While at Oklahoma A & M, she met and married John Duane Logan, her husband of thirty-five years. As newlyweds, they moved to El Reno where Duane was an assistant county extension agent. After two years, the family moved to Woodward where Duane began farming and ranching.

Martha and Duane had six children: John Lewis Logan; Lt. Col. Duane Burtberry (Burt) Logan, USMC retired; Martha Elizabeth (Beth) Thompson; Col. Thomas Matthew Logan, USA retired; Laura Lea Hunter; and Melissa Ann Sanders. Although Martha was busy raising their children, she was active in the PTA and PTO, a Red Cross swimming instructor, and Cub Scout Den Mother.

Martha was very interested in genealogy and was a member of several lineage organizations. She served as Regent of the Woodward County Chapter, and State Chaplin of the Daughters of the American Revolution, National Society of Daughters of the American Colonists, National Society United States Daughters of 1812, and the National Society of Magna Charta Dames.

Martha was a businesswoman who managed her farms and properties, was a Director on the board of Thomas N. Berry & Company, an oil & gas production company, for forty-nine years, and because of her love of art, she opened and operated The Pear Tree Gallery and Loft, a fine art and framing gallery 1980-1990.

Martha's greatest joys were her family and friends. She cherished her role as a mother of six, grandmother of eighteen and a great-grandmother of nine. She loved her aunts, uncles, and cousins. Martha was a good friend and fortunate to have had a special friendship that began as a young child when she met Betty Van Nostrand (Semmel) and Violet Schnieder (Jackson). The three women shared a lifetime of friendship that she counted as one of the greatest blessings of her life.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents Lewis L. Snow and Dora C. Snow; and her husband John D. Logan, who died in 1987, and granddaughter Morgandee Swanson who died in 2013.

Survivors include her six children: John L. Logan and wife Diane of Edmond, OK; Lt. Col. Duane B. (Burt) Logan, USMC retired and his wife Jimmie of Cornelia, GA; Martha Elizabeth (Beth) Thompson and her husband Jim of Valparaiso, IN.; Col. Thomas M. Logan, USA retired and his wife Mary; Laura Lea Hunter and her husband David of Woodward; and Melissa Ann Sanders and her husband Tim of Woodward; eighteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and many loved nieces, nephews, cousins; and three sisters-in-law, Patricia Shaver Logan of OKC, Florence Lavender Logan of Houston, TX and Donna Loughridge Logan of Guymon.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 26, 2018, in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel, 1621 Downs Avenue, Woodward, Oklahoma. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Woodward, Oklahoma. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Plains Indians & Pioneers Museum or a charity of your choice with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
