Woodward – Ed R. Hughes, 85, vice president and member of the board of directors for Stock Exchange Bank, Woodward, died early Saturday in a Shattuck hospital following a 10 – day illness. His service will be at 2 PM today in the First United Methodist Church at Woodward with the Rev. Melvin Ritterhouse and the Rev. Connell Ghormley, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of Stecher Mortuary, Woodward.
Hughes was born September 14, 1893, at Stafford, Kansas, and in 1906 moved to Fort Supply with his parents. During World War I, he served with the United States Army. On June 18, 1921, he married Frances Emma Greenup at Woodward, and in 1920, started in the banking business with Gerlach Bank at Woodward. He later moved to Wakita and farmed until he bought the Sharon State Bank which he operated until 1939 when the bank merged with the Stock Exchange Bank at Woodward.
Hughes was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Woodward Masonic Lodge, Guthrie Consistory and American Legion Post No. 19.
Survivors include his wife, Frances, Fargo; one daughter, Mrs. Glen (Wanda) Luthi, Fargo; and three grandsons
