Jon R. Herring, 70 year old Woodward resident, died Monday, September 20, 2010 in Woodward. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 24, 2010 at the Billings Funeral Home Chapel with Melvin Rittenhouse officiating. Interment will be in the Mooreland Cemetey.
Jon Robin Herring was born on November 23, 1939 seven miles north of Mooreland, Oklahoma and seven miles west to Jon Wesley and Stella (Hillbig) Herring. Jon attended Mooreland schools before enlisting in the United States Navy. He served his country as a Gunners Mate Third Class until being honorably discharged from the Navy in January of 1963. He was united in marriage to Patricia Tranosky and to this union three sons were born. Jon worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator for several companies around Woodward. He retired from Woodward County in 2004.
Jon was a member of the Moose Lodge, the V.F.W. and the N.R.A. He loved going to stock car races to watch his grandson race. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting, but most of all he loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his sons, Jon Andrew Herring and his wife Patricia of Woodward, James Edward Herring of Woodward, J. Christopher Herring of Ocean Township, New Jersey; six grandchildren, Natasha Herring of Woodward, Jon Justin Herring of Woodward, Brandi Herring, Josephine Herring, Katlyn Herring, and Christopher Herring all of Ocean Township, New Jersey; one great-granddaughter, Sarah Mae Herring of Woodward; other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Hiram Herring and one sister, Shirley Warriner.
Memorials may be made to the Woodward VFW with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
