The Woodward News June 17, 2009 HARLEY W. BROWN Harley W. Brown, 93 year old Woodward resident, died Monday, June 15, 2009 in the Greenbrier Nursing Home in Enid. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 18, 2009 at the First Assembly of God Church with the Reverend Sheldon Riley officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.
Harley Wayne Brown was born on March 10, 1916 in Woodward, Oklahoma to Harley and Myrtle (Knox) Brown. Harley grew up in Woodward and attended the Woodward schools. He was united in marriage to Wandalee Mae Young in Woodward, Oklahoma. They lived across from Herbert’s Grocery Store on Texas Avenue. They built their first home in 1947 at 421 7th Street across from where he was born. In 1955, they built the home at 707 9th Street and then they built their current home in 1960 at 705 9th Street.
When Harley was a young man he worked at various jobs including being a jockey for a period of time. He served in the Army during 1940 and in 1941 went to work for the USDA doing native grass research for the Woodward Field Station. Harley retired from the field station in July of 1973.
As a young boy Harley attended the Nazarene Church. When he and Wandalee started dating he began going to the Assembly of God Church with her and they went there their entire married life, which has been the last 70 years. He and Wandalee helped build the Assembly of God Church and parsonage on Webster in Woodward. Harley was a Model A enthusiast and restored two Model A’s. He was an avid gardener and was known for his red cannas. Harley loved old watches and trains and had several of his families watches. Harley was very knowledgeable on the history of Woodward and its people. The Jiffy Trip down the street where he lived was the home of a Civil War Veteran. He knew where the last hitching post was. He had many memento’s of Woodward and they all had their own story. Harley took great pride in his yard and his garden. He won yard of the month several times. Harley’s history and love for Woodward will be missed by all.
He is survived by his daughter Elaine Yates and husband Jerry of Lamont; one sister, Pearl Ogden of Woodward; three grandchildren, Misty Zimbelman and husband Doyle, Wayne Brown Yates and wife Stacey, Charles David Yates; five great-grandchildren, Zachary and Megan Zimbelman, Nicholas, Danielle and Samanta Yates; several nieces, nephews and a host of many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Wandalee on April 29, 2007 and three sisters.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
