Thomas Martin Bird

July 22, 1933 ~ June 2, 2020

Thomas Bird, 86 year old Jal, New Mexico resident died June 2, 2020 in Jal. Funeral Services will be held at the Billings Funeral Home Chapel at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2020 with Reverend Josh Brooks officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery. Arrangements were made under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.

Thomas Martin Bird, Jr., was born on July 22, 1933 in Haskell, Texas to Thomas Martin and Nellie Pauline (Carruth) Bird. He was reared in Haskell and attended Haskell Schools. Thomas was united in marriage to Frances Leonard in 1953, the couple made their first home in Haskell. They were blessed with 4 children Mike, Julie, Alice, and Ragenna. He was then united in marriage to Norma Wood in 1978.

Thomas loved spending time with his family. In earlier years he and his son Mike enjoyed training bird dogs. He also spent a lot of time with his daughter Alice breaking and training wild horses. Thomas was an avid outdoors man he liked to hunt and fish. He had a special connection with his grandchildren and he always looked forward to spending time with them.

Thomas worked in the oilfield for many years. His work allowed him to live in many different states including Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and back to Oklahoma. In the summer of 1964, Thomas moved his family to Woodward, Oklahoma for his job. He worked and stayed there for many years before moving to Jal, New Mexico to be closer to family.

He is survived by two daughters: Julie Marlatt and husband Steve of Woodward, Oklahoma, Alice Henderson and husband Richard of Jal, New Mexico; eight grandchildren: Aaron Marlatt and wife Selena, Jennifer Eagan and husband Blaine, Bryce Marlatt and wife Tatum, Thomas J. Wood and wife Angela, Francis Snow and husband Jeremy, Rebecca Jamison and husband Skylar, Haley Marlatt and, Sarah Angel and husband Cesar; Shane Coon; numerous great grandchildren, several great great grandchildren and one on the way; one sister, Marie Soloman of Texas; two step-children: Kathye Wood and Jim Wood and wife Georgia all of Woodward, Oklahoma.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Frances, daughter Ragenna, son Mike, second wife Norma, granddaughter Bridgett McGahee, grandson Stevie Marlatt, one brother and two sisters.
