Woodward, Okla. —Vera Best, 91 year old Woodward resident, died Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at the Mooreland Heritage Manor. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, February 14, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Shannon Davis and the Reverend Ray Blakley officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery with the Billings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Vera Nelle Allen Best was born April 15, 1922 at May, Oklahoma to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Owen Allen. Vera attended the May Schools through the elementary grades and high school, then went to junior college in Woodward. When she graduated from Woodward Junior College, World War II had begun, and Vera decided to go to Ponca City to learn how to be a riveter. She moved to Kansas City, Kansas to work on North American B25 Bombers. After a year in Kansas City, she moved back to May, and taught the first four grades at Luther Hill School, southwest of May on an emergency certificate. After teaching at Luther Hill for one year, she taught commercial subjects in the May High School for two years. In 1946, she moved to Woodward and worked at Goetzinger Abstract Company. After a few months Vera went to work in the Woodward County Courthouse as a Deputy County Clerk.
Vera and Roy Best were married September 17, 1948, and enjoyed 65 wonderful years together. They are parents of three boys, David, Paul and wife Audrey, and Phillip, all of Woodward, and have three grandchildren, Steven, Patrick and wife Desiree of Woodward, and Tamara Bates and husband Daryl of Vici, Oklahoma. Great grandchildren are Nashee and Nash of Woodward, and AbbyGail of Vici. Vera has a niece, Mary Jane Davenport and husband Cliff of Salem, Oregon.
Vera was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Coral Wilson of Salem, Oregon, a son, Phillip and a grandson, Steven of Woodward.
Vera was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir for many years. Vera also was a Pink Lady hospital volunteer for many years. Both Roy and Vera volunteered for the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, and other organizations in the Woodward area. Since Roy’s retirement in 1981, they traveled extensively, visiting all of the lower 48 states, Ireland, Great Britain, and Europe.
