Woodward, Okla. — Dortha Matilda (Bourbonnais) Baxter, 91 year old former Woodward resident, died Tuesday, May 6, 2008 surrounded by family and friends, at her home in Tulsa. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2008 in the Elmwood Cemetery with Pastor Woody Hamon officiating. Burial will follow with the Billings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Dortha Matilda (Bourbonnais) Baxter was born June 16, 1916 in Sharon, Oklahoma. She attended school in Sharon and graduated from Sharon High School in 1933 as valedictorian of her class. Dortha was united in marriage to Donald Theodore Baxter on November 5, 1939 in Mooreland, Oklahoma. They were blessed with two children, Robert George and Donna Lynn. After Don was honorably discharged from the Army in 1946 they moved to Woodward, living there until 1996 when they moved to Tulsa to be closer to her daughter, Donna. Dortha worked as a Bookkeeper for Williams Auto Company and was the office manager for the City of Woodward until her retirement in 1985.

Dortha was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Tulsa and a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Woodward. She was one of the founding members of the Woodwardettes Home Extension Club, the Cinderella‚s, Woodward Firefighters Auxiliary. Dortha was known throughout the state of Oklahoma as a Master Quilter and her work was published in the 1984 Oklahoma Centennial Quilt Magazine.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna Lynn Baxter Burton of Tulsa; son-in-law, Eddie R. Burton of Tulsa; one grandson, Robert "Blake" Burton of Tulsa; dear friends, Terry Beverly and Chad Willingham of Tulsa and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Cora Mae (Churchill) Long, her step father, Robert Wesley Long, one son Robert George Baxter on August 18, 1978 and her husband Don on September 18, 2006.

n lieu of flowers the Baxter Family would like to request donations be made to the Vista Care Hospice Foundation with the funeral home accepting the donations.
