Woodward, Okla. — Opal Mae Baker, 79 year old Woodward resident, died Sunday, October 24, 2010 at the Grace Living Center in Woodward. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at the Billings Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Randy Weaver officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery.
Opal Mae (Armantrout) Baker was born on August 16, 1931 in a dugout on the family homestead, northwest of Freedom, Oklahoma; she was the daughter of Elton Earl and Lucia Lucile (Wanger) Armantrout. She was reared in Fair Valley and Freedom, Oklahoma. She attended school in Freedom until her marriage. She continued her education in Madill and Coalgate, Okahoma. Opal later received her GED in 1987.
She was united in marriage to Evert Ward Baker on July 1, 1947 in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. They made their first home in Wichita, Kansas and were blessed with two daughters, Shirley and Beverly. The family moved frequently with Ward’s work, living in Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, Texas and Utah. They moved to Woodward in 1964. Opal was a full-time mom until her children were in their teens. Opal worked at the Boomer Drive In, Dennis Fabric, Wayfarer Restaurant and Mellers Photo. She and Ward owned Baker’s Package Store from 1989-1991.
Opal enjoyed sewing, quilting, making rugs and working in her yard. The most enjoyment in her life came from her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; visiting with her sisters and spending time with her dog "Baby".
Opal is survived by two daughters and their spouses, Shirley Adams and husband John; Beverly Chestnut and husband C.E. "Corky" Chestnut all of Woodward; two sisters, De Lois Shepard and husband Melvin; Pat James all of Freedom; four grandchildren, Cynthia Adams, J. R. Adams and wife Crissy; Sarah Boyce and husband Shawn; Becca Price and husband Krispen all of Woodward; seven great grandchildren, Deven and Dylan Adams; Caitlynn Baumann; Bryce and Ashtynn Myers; Pleze and Nash Price; several nieces, nephews and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Evert Ward Baker; her parents, Lucille and Earl Armantrout; brother, Charles Armantrout; granddaughter Stephanie Smith; and two siblings who died in infancy.
