Tootsie Idell Pierce Clayton

Totsie Idell (Pierce) Clayton, 86, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2026, in Amarillo, Texas. Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 27, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 28, 2026, at Cedardale Cemetery east of Mooreland. Burial will follow with Billings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Totsie Idell (Pierce) Clayton was born on December 19, 1939, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Christopher Lambeth Pierce and Faneita Idell (Rogers) Pierce. Totsie grew up in Gruver, Texas, and attended Gruver schools. She was united in marriage to James C. Clayton on November 25, 1958, in Spearman, Texas. Together they built a beautiful life and were blessed with four children: Mary Lou Karr, Billy Jack Clayton, Betty Lou Alvarado, and James Charles Clayton, Jr. Over the years, they made homes in several places including Gruver, Texas; Pocatello, Idaho; Salt Lake City, Utah; Los Angeles, California; Austin, Texas; and Amarillo, Texas. Totsie served as a DPS security officer for the State Capitol of Texas until her retirement.

Totsie enjoyed gardening, cooking, visiting with family and friends, and spending time with those she loved most. More than anything, she cherished her family and the memories they made together.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, J.C. Clayton of Amarillo, Texas; one son, Billy Jack Clayton and wife Faith of White Deer, Texas; two daughters, Mary Lou Karr and husband Tony of Artesia, New Mexico, and Betty Lou Alvarado and husband Victor of Amarillo, Texas; daughter-in-law Maggie Clayton; grandchildren Chris Alvarado, Jeffrey Alvarado, Amy Felder, Misty Payne, Jessica Gilchrest, Jason Clayton, and Charles Clayton; numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; other relatives; and many friends.

Totsie was preceded in death by her parents, Christopher Lambeth Pierce and Faneita Idell Pierce; her son, James Charles Clayton, Jr. (Jimmy) ; and her brothers, Frank Pierce and Darrell Pierce.
