Mass of Christian Burial for Ascension (Chona) Valencia will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2018, at Our Mother of Mercy Church in Waynoka with Father Bala Sagili Jesudas officiating. Interment will be in the Waynoka Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Waynoka, LLC.
Ascension (Chona) Valencia, daughter of Nazario and Narcissa Hernandez, was born May 13, 1926, in Waynoka, Oklahoma, and passed away May 24, 2018, in Torrance, California, at the age of 92 years and 11 days. Chona was united in marriage to Bernardo Valencia. She worked as a nurse at the Waynoka nursing home until her divorce when she moved to Gardena, California. Once there she found work in aerospace as a solderer, which she did up until she retired when she was 68.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Jessie Pancheco and Baby Hernandez; and her brother, John Hernandez.
Chona is survived by one son, Bernardo "Benny" Valencia Jr.; two daughters, Linda Cruz and husband, Phil, and Gloria Valencia; four grandchildren, Monica, Michelle, Nathan, and Brian; four great grandchildren, Grace, Emily, Olivia, and Ashely; her beloved pet, Pookie; her half-sisters, Mary, Olga, Juanita, Anita, Patricia; and brother, Jesse; other relatives and friends.
Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Our Mother of Mercy Church or the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation for Heart Disease Research.
