Merle Dean Clemence, son of the late Paul Edward and Hazel Floy (Woolley) Clemence, was born May 17, 1933, in Waynoka, Oklahoma, and passed away August 22, 2018, in Enid, Oklahoma, at the age of 85 years, 3 months and 5 days.

Merle graduated from Waynoka High School with the Class of 1951 and attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University. On June 7, 1952, he was united in marriage to Dixie Dollie Beagley in Waynoka, where they lived their entire lives.

Merle worked as a fireman on the Santa Fe Railroad. He then opened and ran Merle's Champlain Service Station for many years. There was usually a game of horseshoes behind the station or checkers in the station. He eventually closed the station and went to work for the Waynoka Co-op until he retired. Even after retirement, he helped care for the cattle and land of his nephew, Tom Ward.

Merle was an outstanding singer, and sang often at church, and for many weddings and funerals. He was a member of the Waynoka Coon Hunter's Association and the Sick, Lame, and Lazy Coffee Club.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dixie, and one sister, Karen Ferguson.

Merle is survived by one son, Mark Clemence and wife, Debbie, of Woodward; one daughter, Merla Sims of Waynoka; six grandchildren, along with two others they helped raise and considered to be grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Waynoka EMTs.
