Dacoma – Earl Applegate, who had lived in Dacoma longer than any other living person, died Thursday morning in an Alva hospital at the age of 76.
He was born at Princeton, Missouri, August 10, 1904. The family came to Oklahoma the following year, living at Mooreland for a short time before his father purchased the telephone exchange at Homer, now Dacoma.
Applegate helped his father with the telephone exchange and in a cream station. In 1924, he started a Café which he operated for 20 years and in 1944 bought the drugstore which he operated about four years, then bought the recreation parlor which he operated until 1966.
He also worked for the Farmers Co-Op and after his retirement worked part-time for the Whittet Grocery.
Applegate served as mayor of Dacoma for 27 years. He was a member of the Dacoma Lions Club and at the time of his death was serving on the board of the Union Center, Cemetery Association.
He and Eddith Finnegan were married March 24, 1951, at Drummond. In addition to his wife Eddith, Applegate is survived by a step daughter, Kathryn (Mrs. Gene) Leslie and a granddaughter, all of Alva; two sisters, Gladys (Mrs. Charles) Crutchfield, Goldie (Mrs. Rollin,) Murrow and a brother, Charles Applegate, all of Coffeyville, Kansas. Two brothers preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Saturday in the The, United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles McKinney and the Rev. Morris Pipkin officiating.
