ENID — Funeral service for Powell G. McGuire will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Alva, Okla. Interment will be in Alva Sacred Heart Cemetery under the direction of Wharton Funeral Chapel, Alva.
Powell “Red” McGuire, son of the late Criss McGuire and Estella (Farmer) McGuire, was born May 1, 1918, in Sharon, Kan., and passed away Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at Meadowlark Adult Care, Wichita, Kan., at the age of 92 years, 6 months and 26 days.
Red graduated from Sharon High Schoolwith the class of 1935. He received his degree from Northwestern State College in 1949. He played baseball and basketball in high school and college and in 1997 was inducted in to the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Sports Hall of Fame in both sports.
On Jan. 27, 1942, he entered the Army, where he served with the 158th Regimental Combat Team in New Guinea and the Philippines. He was injured on Luzon and received a Purple Heart. He served until Nov. 22, 1945, and received an honorable discharge.
After his return from the service, he was united in marriage to Oringa Catherine Reichenberger in Sharon, Kan., on June 1, 1946.
He began his teaching and coaching career in Kansas at Sharon High School, then went on to teach and coach at Attica High School, Satanta High School and inOklahoma, Hammond High School, where he retired in May 1985.
In his early years, Red played baseball for the Cessna Bobcats and other town teams and played basketball for the Anthony Boosters and others. He took up gardening in the ’60s and continued to be an avid gardener until 2004.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, V.F.W. and a loyal Northwestern Ranger fan.
Besides his parents, six brothers, Marshall, Tom, Homer, Maurice, Vince and Gordon McGuire and one sister, Vivian McGuire, preceded him in death.
Powell is survived by his wife, Oringa, of 64 years; sons, Nick McGuire of Attica, Kan., and Pat McGuire and wife Kathy of Woodward, Okla.; daughter, Brenda Traffas and husband Charlie of Wichita; three grandchildren, Keri Pannell and husband Bill of Alva, Okla., Ericka Beaty and husband Kris of Woodward, Okla., and Ryan McGuire of Bixby, Okla.; great-grandchildren, Jordyn and Matthew Pannell; sister, Elinor Walton of Mulvane, Kan.; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews and many friends.
Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Alzheimer’s Association.
