Funeral services for Irene Welty will be Saturday, May 3, at 2 p.m. at Freedom First Christian Church with Rev. Mark Kinkle officiating. Burial will follow in Freedom Cemetery. Wharton Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.whartonfuneralchapel.com.
Irene Ruby Bliss Welty was born June 11, 1919, in Lookout to Charles and Iva (Axling) Bliss. She began her eternal life in heaven on April 28, 2014, at the age of 94 years, 10 months and 17 days.
She graduated from Freedom High School in 1939. She received her teaching degree from Northwestern State College in Alva and taught school in the small rural schools of Houston Creek, District 41 and Coy.
Her career as wife and mother started in 1945 when she married Dick Welty. To this union, six children were born. They made their home in and around the Freedom area. In 1965, she went to work in the Freedom School cafeteria, retiring in 1982 after 17 years. She was a great cook and loved to cook and do needle-crafts.
She was an active member of the Freedom Baptist Church until she moved to Woodward in 2003. She then became a member of the Elm Street Baptist Church in Woodward. Her last year was spent in the Vici Nursing Home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick, in 1976; her parents; brothers Howard Bliss and Chester Bliss; and sisters Mildred Aldrich, Viola Davidson, Ethel Bennett, Harriett Markham and Dorothy Bliss.
She is survived by four sons: Steve (Mary) Welty from Stillwater, Dean (Jeanette) Welty from Freedom, Phillip (Gayla) Welty from Laverne, and Terry (Rebecca) Welty from Lorena, Texas; two daughters: Rita (Leo) Coulter from Woodward and Winona (Rex) Hodges of Woodward; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Hoffman; sisters-in-law Ila Kornele of Mooreland; Betty Perrin of Fargo; Naomi Welty of Shattuck; Alice Welty of Coldwater, Kan.; and Iva Lee Bliss; a number of nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to Panhandle Nutrition of Woodward or the Freedom Museum.
