August 11, 1937 - October 6, 2021

Shirley Wagner, 84-year-old Freedom resident, died peacefully at home where she wanted to be on Wednesday, October 6, 2021. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 9, 2021, in the Freedom United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Freedom Cemetery with the Billings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Jean Wagner was born August 11, 1937, in Newcastle, Colorado, the daughter of David and Nola (Parrish) McNeal. Shirley was reared in Newcastle, attended school in Newcastle, and graduated from Newcastle High School in May of 1955 as salutatorian of her class. On August 24, 1961, she was united in marriage to David "Sonny" Wagner in the Methodist Church in Alva, Oklahoma, and they made their home in Freedom where they have remained since that time. Shirley worked for AT&T in Newcastle, and after moving to Freedom worked at the Freedom Laundry. She then went to work for the United States Post Office in Freedom and retired as postmaster after more than 30 years of service.

Shirley was an avid supporter of her family; she hardly ever missed a ball game of her sons or her grandchildren. She made sure her son and grandchildren all had an afghans that she crocheted. She donated many of her afghans for fundraisers throughout the Freedom community. She always enjoyed a trip to the casino to try her luck. She enjoyed her family and spent time outdoors enjoying nature.

She was member of the Freedom Methodist Church, where she could often be found donating her time. Shirley usually took care of the church offerings, and always planted flowers in the church flower beds, and helped out with funeral dinners.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Sonny, of the home; one son, Roger Wagner and wife Cindy of Woodward; three grandchildren, Lacey Echelle and husband Joe, Tanner Wagner, and Jami Volk and husband Shane; five great-grandchildren, Grant Echelle, Taryn Echelle, Wesley Volk, Rhett Volk and Beckham Volk; two sisters, Pauline Eccher of Denver, Colorado, and Linda Reser and husband Jim of Union, Oregon; three brothers, Ronald McNeal of Rifle, Colorado; Joe McNeal and wife Lorraine of Newcastle, Colorado; and Fred McNeal of Newcastle, Colorado; several nieces and nephews, and many good friends

She was preceded in death by her parents, and mother and father-in-law.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Freedom United Methodist Church with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
