December 31, 1932 - August 18, 2018

Funeral services for Simon L. Stewart will be Tuesday, August 21, 2018, at 2 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Chapel in Alva with Rev. John Clapp, pastor of Bible Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Freedom Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Chapel.

Simon L. Stewart, son of John C. and Goldie E. (Terrill) Stewart, was born December 31, 1932, on a farm north of Freedom, Oklahoma. He passed away August 18, 2018, at Share Convalescent Home at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 18 days.

Growing up, Simon attended Old Freedom through the sixth grade, going on to Freedom High School and graduating in 1950. As a young boy he helped with chores on the farm.

He was drafted by the United States Army in 1953 and served 5 years. After returning home from the Army he worked for Ledford Construction Co. for several years.

In December of 1963 he came back to Freedom to stay with his mother to help her out. He started working for the Oklahoma State Department in 1964 and retired after 30 years in 1994.

He moved to Alva in 1988 so his mother would be closer to the doctor. He took the greatest care of her.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Goldie; two brothers, John E. and George; and four half-brothers, Billy, Theodore, David and Fred.

Simon is survived by his twin brother, Sam, of Alva; his sister Mary and her husband of Amarillo, Texas; several nieces and nephews and their spouses: Theresa Stewart, Tracy and Tommy, Debra and Ron, Donita and Mark Hohenall, Jeffery and Hilda Melkus, Clint and April Stewart, Michael Melkus, Linda and Wes Lavicky and Carol and Joe Johnson.

He is also survived by several great nieces and nephews: Melissa Jo and Chris Colvin, Kayla Stewart, David Stewart, Lisa and John Diacon, and Kamran and Sarah Khan, Paige and Ben James, Kortnee Hohensee, Jeffery A., Rebecca and Noah Melkus, Joe and Kay Pierce, Jason Pierce, J.C. and Shauna Stewart, Stormy and Michael Rosenberger, Tiffany Stewart, Angela, Bill and Keith Bell, Shawna and Nathan Applegate; great great nieces and nephews, Emma and Kailler Khan-James, Paitan and Angelien Vance, Cort Whitaker, Cody Moore, Leah Rosenberger, Tyler Pierce, Allison Applegate, Sarah and John Diacon, Kyla, Chandler and Landon Colvin.
