Freedom Cemetery


The funeral for Mildred E. Babcock, 89, of Freedom will be 10 a.m. Friday at Freedom United Methodist Church. The Rev. Carolyn Murrow will officiate. Burial will be in Freedom Cemetery. Arrangements are by Wharton Funeral Chapel.

She was born Nov. 18, 1916, near Ellendale to William Elwood “Doc” and Edna Belle Payton Lile and died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005, at Oklahoma Heart Hospital, Oklahoma City.

She attended Freedom and Woodward high schools and received her G.E.D. from Dodge City Community College in 1965.

She married Glenn Baker Babcock Sept. 19, 1939, at Freedom. They made their home in the Freedom area. He died Dec. 7, 1978.

In the 1950s she cooked at Cattleman’s Cafe. In 1963, she went to work at Pioneer Lodge Nursing Home, Coldwater, Kan., as a nurse aide. She was later the administrator for seven years. She retired in 1971 and returned to the ranch. She stopped ranching in 1980.

She was a member of Freedom United Methodist Church, U.M.W., Cimarron Neighbors Club, board of Freedom Museum, Cimarron Cowboy’s Auxiliary, Free-dom Senior Citizens, Freedom Chamber of Commerce and election board. She also served on the rural water board.

Surviving are her daughter, Carol Wolgamott of Hardtner, Kan.; two sons, W. P. “Pat” of Pueblo, Colo., and Lyle Baker of Woodward; three sisters, Bonnie Castor of St. Louis, Thurlene Quainton of Greenville, S. C., and Laketa Christoferson of Salt Lake City; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Glenn, she was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.

Memorials may be made to Freedom United Methodist Church, fire department, and the museum.
