Freedom Cemetery


Graveside services will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at 1 p.m. at the Freedom Cemetery, Freedom, Oklahoma, with Reverend Mark Kinkel, Freedom Christian Church, officiating. Online condolences may be made at http://www.whartonfuneralchapel.com.

Shirley Rae, was born on August 2, 1940 in Alva, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Margaret Jane (Oliver) and James Ernest Woodard. Shirley passed away peacefully on May 28, 2023 in hospice care at the Attica Long Term Care Center at the age of 82 years, 9 months and 26 days. She was a resident of Sharon, Kansas.

Shirley grew up on a farm north of Freedom Oklahoma. She graduated from Northwest Oklahoma State University with a teaching degree and taught school at Cimmaron, Kansas, Medicine Lodge, Kansas, Monett, Missouri, and Stover, Missouri. Shirley pioneered and created At-Risk programs in the state of Missouri and as a result was awarded Missouri Teacher of Excellence by the state of Missouri. Her teaching career spanned 40 years.

She enjoyed reading, playing cards, family genealogy, and spending time with her family and her dog, Sadie.

On August 10, 1963 she married Jerry LeClair.

She was preceded in death by her father, James Woodard, her mother, Margaret Woodard and her brother, Jimmie (Sherrie) Woodard.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Jerry of Sharon, Kansas; three daughters, Maria (Bill) Cundiff of Hardtner, Kansas; Michelle (Steve) Eck of Sharon, Kansas; Lisa LeClair of Oklahoma City; one son, Jason LeClair of Sharon, Kansas; sister, Marilyn Coulter of Hennessy; two granddaughters, Elaine (Garrett) Sharpe of Zephyr Hills, Florida; Sarah Eck of Wichita, Kansas; three grandsons, Caden Christensen of Stillwater, Cody Moore (Kathryn Baugh) of Hardtner, Kansas, Jacob Eck of Sharon, Kansas, beloved nieces, nephews and friends.

In lieu of flowers family asked that you donate to County Care Hospice at 104 N. Sheen Street, Mount Hope, Kansas or to Wharton Funeral Chapel.
