Velma was born on April 19, 1906 in Alva, Oklahoma to Eddie W Hopkins and Lenora Pickering. In 1910, Velma's Mother, Lenora, died on February 27. This was one week after the birth of Velma's brother, baby Francis. Francis died July 3, 1910. At that time, the family lived in Fritzlen in Woods County. In September of that year, Velma’s Father, Eddie married Nancy Ellen Beck.

By 1910, the family lived in Blaine in Baca County, Colorado.

On July 30 1928, Velma married James Buhler in Alva. To this union two children were born: Sons Francis James and Edward Lee. James and Velma resided in Hardtner, KS, until they dissolved their marriage in about 1954.

James Buhler married Cora (Willis) Ramsey in 1955. Velma Buhler married Gilbert Whalen on March 14, 1956 in Oregon. Velma's last known residence was Alva, Oklahoma.

The Kiowa News November 9, 1978 Page 5 has her death notice. It does not mention her maiden name. It does mention that her sons were Francis James and Edward Lee Buhler. In Velma's son Francis James Buhler's obituary, it states that Velma's middle name was 'CORA.' I cannot verify this through any other source. It could be a mistake, based upon the fact that James Buhler's second wife was Cora (Willis) Ramsey; and Cora had a sister named Velma.
