Capron Cemetery


ENID — Graveside memorial service for Margaret Jo Thompson, 64, will be 6 p.m. Saturday, March 17, 2012, at Capron Cemetery. The Rev. Charles Shorow will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Goodwin Funeral Home, Cherokee. The family will be at the home of Sheila and Mickey Ferrell after the service.

Jo was born July 22, 1949, in Enid to Fred and Margaret Talley Layman and passed away Monday, March 12, 2012, in Moore.

She grew up in the Burlington area and graduated from Burlington High School in 1965. She then attended Oklahoma University.

She and Danny Leon Thompson were married in September 1967. They moved to Minneapolis, Minn., where he played major league ball with the Minnesota Twins. They later moved to Arlington, Texas, where he played for the Texas Rangers. Danny passed away in December 1976.

After her husbands death, Jo and her daughters moved back to Burlington, where they lived for four years before moving to Norman, where she earned her graduate degree. She lived in Norman for four years.

She moved to Chicago and attended the University of Chicago, where she received her master's degree in social services administration.

She began a 20 plus year career at the Scholarship and Guidance Association, developing school programs and outreach support.

While in Chicago she was married for a period of time to Jerome Maynard.

Surviving are two daughters, Tracy Thompson Mickle and husband Daniel of Burke, Va., and Dana Margaret McDonald and husband Sharn of Carol Stream, Ill.; one granddaughter, Mackenzie Lauren Nettles; sister, M. Ann Teeters and husband Dan of Katy, Texas; mother-in-law, Margaret Thompson of Alva; seven nieces; three nephews; two great-nieces; 10 great-nephews; brother-in-law, Jim Thompson and wife Barbara; sisters-in-law, Phoebe Angle and husband Larry, Sheila Ferrel and husband Mickey and Jane Thompson.

In addition to her husband, Danny, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, Monty Thompson.
