Nevada, Missouri – The funeral for Silas W. Young, 75, a former resident of Alva who died Monday at Nevada City Hospital in Missouri, will be at 2 PM Friday at Wharton Funeral Chapel in Alva. The Rev. Ron Pingleton, pastor of Alva First Christian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Alva Municipal Cemetery.
He was born February 15, 1914, on a farm southwest of Alva to Charley E. and Dela Dye Young. He attended Union Center rural grade school and Dacoma, High School. In 1947, he moved with his mother to Alva. On November 4, 1948, he and Byrdie L. Tate were married in Alva, where they lived until 1949 when they moved to Nevada, Missouri. They worked at the state school and hospital. He was a nurse and also farmed and raised cattle. He also was an artist. While in Nevada, he attended the Christian Church.
Surviving are one stepdaughter, Mrs. David (Betty) Lobovitz of Garfield Heights, Ohio; five step grandchildren; seven nieces and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife on November 21, 1984, two stepsons, one sister and one brother.
