The funeral for Raymond Shafer Jr., 78, of Alva, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at Alva Friends Church. Mark McDonald, pastor, will officiate. Military honors will be by the Marine Corps. Burial will be in Alva Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are by Wharton Funeral Chapel. Visitation with the family will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
He was born Feb. 24, 1930, in Alva to Raymond Mitchell and Beulah Estella Arndt Shafer and died Friday, April 11, 2008, at Bass Baptist Health Center, Enid.
He attended the Alva public school system then joined the Marine Corps Feb. 25, 1952, and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged Feb. 25, 1954. He married Anna May Nusser June 30, 1950, in Alva. They made their home in Alva, where he worked for Brunsteter Motors. He then went to work for the state highway department.
Surviving are four daughters, Ruth Keigley, Donna Holcom and Anita Streich, all of Alva, and Iris Wilson of Enid; four sons, Lonnie of Weatherford, Clint of Rock Springs, Wyo., and Raymond and Ted, both of Alva; one sister, Velma Dennis; three brothers, Gerald Shafer of Tempe, Ariz., and Allen Shafer, and Dean Shafer, both of Alva; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, and one sister.
Memorials may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation cancer division.
