The funeral for Maxine Brady Pederson, 90, will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23,
2008, at Driftwood Christian Church. Pastor Dave Atzenweiler will officiate.
Burial will be in Alva Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral
Home Inc., Kiowa, Kan. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22,
2008, at the funeral home with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.
She was born April 28, 1918, east of Alva to Ralph and Myrtle Brady and died
Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008.
She attended Short Springs School through the eight grade. She attended Alva
High School, graduating in 1934. She graduated from Northwestern College in 1938
with a bachelor of science degree. She began teaching at Elm Dale District 52
and taught at Short Springs 42, Franklin District 104, Horace Mann and
Greenleaf. In 1956, she began teaching at Amorita, then in 1957, she transferred
to Burlington schools for a 23-year tenure.
She married Axel Pederson July 27, 1939, in Cherokee. They made their home in
Alva, moving to a farm northwest of Alva in 1948. In 1956, they moved to a farm
west of Burlington where they lived until his death on July 26, 1989.
She continued to live on the farm until 2001 when she moved to Kiowa. In 2006,
she moved to the Kiowa Manor, where she lived until her death.
She was a charter member of Driftwood Christian Church, 4-H leader for 20 years,
Sunday school teacher for 20 years, served in the nursery for 21 years, and was
recognized as the 1971 Alfalfa County Teacher of the Year. She was a member of
Oklahoma Educators Association, Woods County Retired Teachers Association, ABBD
Senior Citizens, Burlington FFA Mothers Club and Alva Advantage Club.
Surviving are her children, Perry Pederson of Ponca City and Roland Pederson of
Burlington; one sister, Mary Ellen Watkins of Kiowa; two brothers, Ronald Brady
of Alva and Larry Brady of Hugoton, Kan.; four grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Axel, she was preceded in death by two sisters.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Driftwood Christian Church,
Burlington Education Foundation or Kiowa District Manor and Hospital.
