Phillip P., on of Joseph and Cagney Paya, was born near Murphysboro, Illinois, August 4, 1872 and departed this life June 14, 1931, at the age of 58 years, 10 months and 10 days at his home in Alva, Oklahoma, 710 Barnes Ave.
At the age of seven his father engaged in freeighting. This was in 1880 and three years later he moved to Naron Township, Pratt County, Kansas, near the present site of Buyers, Kansas.
While living here he met Mrs. Della N. Lemings to whom he was united in marriage, November 16, 1892 at Pratt, Kansas, to which union were born 10 children, nine of whom survived their father. The children are: Mrs. Lovina Wunsch, 711 Flynn Street, Alva; Elmer L., Kansas City, Missouri, William Joseph, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Mrs. Bretta Jones, Los Angeles, California; Robert, Enid, Oklahoma; Mrs. Genevieve Rowe, Dallas, Texas; Adaline, Fort Morgan, Colorado; Caggie and Ruth who are at home, Jeannette Paya died July 4, 1929.
He came to Oklahoma in 1893 one week after the opening of the Strip. He staked a claim which was their home until they moved into Alva to educate their children in 1914, where they have lived practically all the time since. The claim has never changed hands since the deed was made to him by the United States. All the children except Lavina were born on this Homestead.
He was converted at a revival meeting being conducted by Dr. John Pritchard at the old Liberty Friends church near his claim. He joined the Friends at Liberty but when the church was organized in Alva he brought his rights here and became a charter member of this organization. He was a faithful member and held many appointments of trust and confidence. He was an overseer for years and also a trustee. He was always faithful to the church of his choice and was always in his place unless positively hindered so that he could not be present. He loved his Sunday school and took an active part in it. He never tasted liquor in any form or tobacco and lived a very exemplary life. He is loved and respected by his church and his absence will be noted from his accustomed place.
