Alva Cemetery


The funeral for Jack "Junior" Johnson, 75, of Liberal, Kan., will be 10 a.m. today at Central Christian Church. Spence Powers and the Rev. David Woods will officiate. Burial will be 4 p.m. today in Alva Municipal Cemetery with full military honors. Arrangements are by Miller Mortuary, Liberal, Kan.

He was born Nov. 22, 1929, in Woods County to James P. and Nettie E. Broomhall Johnson and died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005, at St. Francis Via Christi Campus, Wichita, Kan.

He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Northwest Oklahoma State University, Alva.

He served in the Army 45th Signal Corps and was a veteran of the Korean conflict, 1950-1952.

He married Wilma Jean Murrow in Alva Aug. 4, 1952.

He taught and coached at Langdon, Kan., for two years and for USD No. 480 Liberal School System for 36 years. He was instrumental in starting the cross country program, assistant coach of boys basketball and head track coach and, at the onset of girls athletics, started the LHS volleyball and basketball programs. He led the girls basketball team to a state championship in 1976 before accepting the girls coaching position at Seward County Community College.

Surviving are his wife, Wilma Jean of the home; one son, Jackie Johnson of Plains, Kan.; two daughters, Jeanette Grant of Houston, and Janella Mendenhall of Yukon; two brothers, Harold Johnson of Alva and Donald Ray Johnson of Memphis, Tenn.; two sisters, Yvonne Morgan of Enid and Donna Fae Dunning of Wichita; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the Jack Johnson Scholarship Fund, First National Bank.
