GILBERT LEON JOHNSON

Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 12, 2016, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Pastor John Smith, Alva Wesleyan Church, officiating, Burial will follow in the Alva Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Wharton Funeral Chapel. Gilbert Leon, son of Lucille M. (Boham) and Wilbert Ode Johnson, was born Dec. 10, 1959, in Alva, Oklahoma. Surrounded by family, he passed away at Share Convalescent Home on Aug. 8, 2016, at the age of 56 years seven months and 29 days.

He attended Alva High School, participating in all Goldbug athletics, and graduated with the class of 1978. In 1982 Gilbert graduated with a B.S. degree in business administration from Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

Gilbert was married to Joanna Smith on Dec. 1, 2007, at the First Baptist Church in Alva.

His career with the United States Postal Service began Jan. 7, 1984, in Cherokee, Oklahoma, later transferring to Alva, where he had one of the largest routes, walking 18 miles a day for over 31 years. Gilbert's future plans were to retire in 2016.

Gilbert was an avid hunter and fisherman, which he and his boys love to do.

He was preceded in death by his father on April 19, 1990.

He is survived by his wife of the home, Joanna; mother, Lucille; his four sons, Jared Johnson and fiancée Amanda, Landon Johnson and wife Kieara, Jed Smith and Caleb Smith (all of Alva); two grandchildren, Keagan and Evelyn; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Memorials in his honor should be made to CFO/AGEF (Community Foundation of Oklahoma/Alva Goldbug Education Fund) for Gilbert Johnson Scholarship for a graduating Goldbug Athlete attending NWOSU.
