Alva Cemetery


February 24, 1895 - November 12, 1982

Hopeton – W. P. "Bill" Haltom, 87, died Friday, November 12, 1982 at Share Medical Ctr., Alva.

Services will be at 10:30 AM Monday in the Alva Wesleyan Church and will be officiated by Doctor John M. Snook, president of Bartlesville Wesleyan College, the Rev. C. B. Colah, District Superintendent of the Wesleyan churches, and the Rev. Marion Hadsell, pastor of Hopeton Wesleyan church. Burial will be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Wharton Funeral Chapel.

Haltom was born February 24, 1895, in Reno County, Kansas. In 1896, the family came in a covered wagon to a claim 13 miles south of Alva. He attended Mid-– Valley rural school. He attended Northwestern Normal Teachers College and later taught at Fair Valley rural school.

On March 1, 1916, he married Alice Merle Beecher at the Pleasant View Church. They lived on a farm a half mile north of Greensburg. In 1922, they moved to the Carmen area and, in 1924, moved to Chickasha. In 1925, they purchased the Charles Nelson store in Hopeton, changing the name to the Haltom General Store, which he operated for 15 years. He was postmaster at Hopeton for 30 years.

He was a member of the Hopeton Wesleyan church where he was a member of the church board, a trustee, and for over 45 years was superintendent of the Sunday school. For over 50 years, he was a member of the Tri – State District Board of Administration of the Wesleyan church. For 55 years, he was a trustee of the Bartlesville Wesleyan College, where the student center was later named the Haltom Campus Center in honor of him and his wife.

He was a charter member of the Hopeton Lions Club and a director of the Hopeton State Bank.

His son, Harvey, two sisters and two brothers died before him.

In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include a sister, Elizabeth (Mrs. Bill) Rhodes, Carmen, and five brothers, Wes J. and Andrew, both of Alva, Estel and Everett, both of Hopeton, and Otis of Enid.

Memorials in his name may be made to the Cancer Fund or to Bartlesville Wesleyan College.
