Graveside services for Ruth Arlene Farris will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 9, 2020, in the Alva Municipal Cemetery with Rev. Chris Ruwaldt officiating. Interment is under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Alva.
Ruth Arlene Farris, daughter of the late Clyde Lester and Glenna Ellen (Wise) Long, was born March 15, 1925, in Dacoma, Oklahoma, and passed away December 5, 2020, in Alva, Oklahoma, at the age of 95 years, 10 months and 18 days. She was the youngest of five children, having two sisters and two brothers (Okla, Russell, Maxine and Dale).
Ruth grew up in Dacoma and attended school at the Dacoma Grade School, graduating from Dacoma High School with the Class of 1943. While in high school she worked on weekends at George Whittet's grocery store in Dacoma. After graduation, she worked at the prisoner of war camp south of Alva until it's closing in November of 1945.
She married Earl Ford Farris on August 12, 1947, and lived on the Thatcher place south of Dacoma for a few months before moving to Alva.
She worked at the Montgomery Ward Catalog Store, J. C. Penny store, for an oil and lease broker above Rialto Theater, the Credit Bureau, and as a Deputy for the Woods County Clerk from 1973 until her retirement in 1987.
She was a member of the Women VFW, Women of the Moose, and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, reading and watching Ranger basketball. Most of all, she loved visiting with family and friends.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; one son, John Farris; and four siblings, Russell Long, Dale Long, Okla Smith and Maxine Baker.
Ruth is survived by two children, Nick Farris and wife Peggy of Alva, and Anita Farris of Alva; two grandchildren, Lindsay Hansel and husband Aaron of Moore, and Kyle Farris of Alva; two great grandchildren, Cole and Nicky Hansel; other relatives and many friends.
Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to NWOSU Basketball Programs.
