Alva Cemetery


The funeral for Frederick John Brown, 95, of Alva, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Alva Church of the Nazarene. The Rev. Harold Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Alva Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are by Marshall Funeral Home of Alva.

He was born March 3, 1910, on a farm west of Alva to Joseph Albert and Edna Helen Hood Brown and died Monday, June 27, 2005, at his daughter's home in Alva.

He attended school at Mount Vernon. On Aug. 22, 1932, he married Frances Ila Lyon at her home. They lived on a farm west of Alva where he farmed and traded cattle. Working for WPA at 30 cents per hour, he helped lay blacktop on U.S. 64 from Plainview to Alva and assisted with building bridges on the old Cora Road. In 1947, he and his family survived a tornado, which destroyed their house.

Surviving are his wife, Frances of the home; two daughters, Betty Lou Brown of Alva and Shirley Ann Smith of Ponca City; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Alva Church of the Nazarene.
