James L. Merz was born February 23, 1937 in Elk City, Oklahoma to Frances
(Flies) and Frank Joseph Merz. He passed away at his home on September 25, 2018
at Canute, Oklahoma at the age of 81 years, 7 months and 2 days.
James grew up in the Canute, Oklahoma community and attended school at Holy
Family School graduating in 1956. After graduation he helped his parents on the
family farm and met Mary Lou Simpson. They were later married on December 20,
1958 at the Holy Family Church in Canute, Oklahoma. James and Mary Lou continued
to live in the Canute community where they farmed and raised their children.
James was a lifetime farmer and even after the passing of Mary Lou in 2004 he
continued to plant wheat, cotton and raised cattle. James enjoyed playing cards
with family friends and the neighbors, especially playing Pollyanna with Teresa
and Orville Word, drinking coffee with his buddies at the tire shop and spending
time with his family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Perry Merz; 2 brothers,
Raymond and Joe Merz; 1 sister, Evelyn Dobyns and 1 nephew, Danny Merz.
He is survived by his 3 children, Pam Osterloh and husband, David, Elk City, OK,
Kevin Merz and wife, Lana, Canute, OK and Casey Merz, Canute, OK; 6
grandchildren, Nathan Merz and wife, Kaitlyn, Houston, TX, Kyle Merz and Taylor
Anderson, Weatherford, OK, Kara Taylor and husband, C.J., Canute, OK, Chandler
Merz and wife, Ausha, Hammon, OK, Holden Merz, Canute, OK and Addie Merz,
Russellville, AR; 4 great grandchildren, Kayton Taylor, Mayleigh Merz, Silas
Merz and Jay Merz; 2 great grandchildren on the way; 5 sisters-in-law, Pat Merz,
Sue Hammer and husband, Ronnie, Gladys Morris, Susan Simpson, Peggy Simpson; 2
brothers-in-law, Billy Simpson and wife, Cleo and Coy Simpson and wife, Joyce
and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Arrangements are under the direction of Whinery Funeral Service.
