Fiddler Came to America As Boy From Czecholovakia
Charles Fiddler who resided about two and a half miles northwest of
Carpenter, committed suicide Sunday night by hanging himself in a barn
owned by his son, which is located about three miles from the senior
Fiddler home.
Fiddler came to America together with his mother and brother Frank Fiddler
from Czechoslovakia when a small boy and has live in this county since
that time. He was 51 years old at the time of his death. He leaves a wife
and six children.
Mr. and Mrs. Fiddler went to the home of Mrs. Fiddler's mother, Mrs. Joe
Cheavenka, near Canute, where the heirs of Joe Chevaneka held a conference
in an effort to settle all matters concerning the estate before the
estate was formally settled. On their return home Mr. and Mrs. Fiddler
discussed the way Mrs. Fiddler had agreed to share her share of the
estate. Mr. Fiddler was not pleased with the settlement. After they
arrived home the conversation continued. Mrs. Fiddler attempted to tell the
children about the settlement proposed, when Mr. Fiddler became angered
and said he was going to leave home. He got some clothes and his security
card and left the home about 10:00 o'clock Sunday night. It is reported
that he had gone away before for a short time, but always returned,
consequently the family thought he was going to Amarillo to his brother,
Frank, and was not unduly alarmed by his action, Monday morning Charles
Fiddler, Jr., went to the old Hunter farm, which he recently purchased, to
do some work. As he drove into the barn yard he noticed the barn door
open and as he drove past the door he saw his father standing in the
drive way. He got out of the car and went into the barn when he discovered
that there was a rope around his father's neck and that he was dead.
Charles, Jr. went to a neighbor and reported the tragedy. He then went to
Hammon and notified Sheriff Moad.
Sheriff Moad, County Attorney Leroy Vick and Justice Bowman went to the
old Hunter farm to hold an inquest. A jury was summoned in the Carpenter
community and the inquest was held. The verdict was that Charles Fiddler
took his own life by hanging.
