Maxine grew up in Elk City where she graduated from high school in 1939. After graduation she worked at Kelly's Creamery and for her father at the Elk City Grill and other family members at the Green Frog Cafe`, she also managed Maxine's Grill on Rt. 66 during WW II. Maxine met and was married to James "Jim" Asher, Jr. in 1944. After their marriage Maxine followed Jim as far as she could ending up in Bremerton, Washington. When Jim went overseas she returned to Little Rock, Arkansas where she was a bookkeeper at the Marion Hotel until after the war had ended. Upon Jim's discharge, they moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 1952 where Jim went to work for the newly formed Central Transformer Corporation and Maxine became executive secretary to Mr. Carl Haun at the original Ben Pearson Company. After raising her family, she returned to the accounts receivable department at Arkansas Mill Supply until her retirement in 1983. Maxine became a Christian at the age of 13 and was a faithful member of the Church of Christ in Elk City, Pine Bluff, Arkansas and most recently at the Stallings Drive Church of Christ in Nacogdoches, Texas.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Howie Asher, 2 brothers, Donnie and Kenneth Midyett and one sister, Eudora Midyett Pierce.
She is survived by her son, Jeffrey Asher and wife, Cynthia, Nacogdoches, Texas; two granddaughters, Rebekah Starnes and husband, Sam, White Oak, Texas and Mary Beth Housdan and husband, Jeremy, Wichita, Kansas; two great granddaughters, Emma Jane Starnes and Mia Starnes; 4 nephews, 1 niece and a host of other relatives and friends.
The family requests, in lieu of flowers that memorials be sent to Friends of Ethiopia c/o Shirlee Word, 9808 Stripling Drive Ft. Worth, TX 76244.
