George Junior "Pete" Morrison

G. J. "Pete" Morrison, age 93 and longtime resident of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, in the Jane Phillips Medical Center, Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

George Junior "Pete" Morrison was born on October 16, 1919 in rural Dewey, Oklahoma. He was the son of George W. Morrison and Ella M. (Byrd) Morrison. He grew up in the Dewey, Oklahoma area where he graduated high school with the Dewey Class of 1937. After high school, he was employed for a short time with the Buy-Rite Grocery Store in Bartlesville.

Pete and the former Miss Frances Fern Surrett were united in marriage on June 5, 1940 in Dewey and they made their home in Bartlesville.

The year was 1942 when Pete gained employment with Phillips Petroleum Company as a driveway salesman at the Phillips 66 service station at 4th and Cherokee, Bartlesville and his career was launched on his belief "the only difference between stepping stones and stumbling blocks is the way you use them." During this period of time, young men were being drafted for the war effort and, in 1944, Pete received his call and was drafted into the U.S. Army. His service time was short-lived, however, as he was wounded soon after landing in northern Luzon (Philippines). After receiving his honorable discharge, as well as the Purple Heart, he returned to Bartlesville and after recouping from his injury, returned to his assignment at the Phillips Petroleum Company, Bartlesville bulk plant. Pete's career with the company began its move upward. It took him and his family to many locations. In 1959, he returned to Bartlesville as assistant sales manager. This was just one of many promotions that were to come. His name has been a symbol of marketing and Phillips 66 for many years. In January of 1971, Pete met his goal that he set for himself 26 years earlier when he was appointed Vice President of Sales. Pete retired from the company on March 1, 1984 bringing to a close a distinguished career that spanned more than four decades with Phillips Petroleum Company.

Pete was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Bartlesville. Other memberships included Legion of Honor Order of DeMolay; Blue Lodge No. 284; 32nd Degree KCCH Mason in the Scottish Rite bodies; Shriner in Tulsa Akdar Temple; past director and 50-year member of the Royal Order of Jesters Court No. 47; past member of the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club; and past president of Hillcrest Country Club.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Fern Morrison of the Bartlesville home; daughter, Yvonne James and her husband, Dr. Bob James, also of Bartlesville; grandson, George James and his wife, Keely, of Stillwater, Oklahoma; granddaughter, Susan James of Las Vegas, Nevada; great-granddaughter, Kami Shipman and her husband, Shannon, of Stillwater; great-granddaughter, Katy Baker and her husband, Josh, also of Stillwater; and great-great grandson, Kannon James Shipman, of Stillwater.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests charitable contributions can be made to Akdar Shrine Crippled Children's Fund, c/o Akdar Shrine Center, 2808 S. Sheridan Rd., Tulsa, OK 74129-1014.

Visitation for Mr. Morrison will be held on Friday from 9 AM to 9 PM with the family present from 6:30-8:30 PM, in the Arnold Moore & Neekamp Funeral Home, 710 S. Dewey Ave.

Services will be held on Saturday, February 16, at 2:00 PM in the First Presbyterian Church, Bartlesville. Kristi Rodgers will be the officiant. Interment will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery.
