DAVIS FAMILY
FUNERAL HOME
DEWEY, WASHINGTON CO, OK
(permission granted)
Wayne Hawkins, 77, longtime Copan resident, died Tuesday in
Copan. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him as a hardworking,
family-loving and grandkid-spoiling guy who enjoyed hunting, fishing and simply
watching God’s creatures.
Wayne was born the son of Jerry and Goldie (Steeley) Hawkins on November 30,
1940 in Bartlesville, OK. Growing up, he loved playing baseball oftentimes with
the great Mickey Mantle. During those early years he worked in the family
business Hilltop Grocery Store. His least favorite day was Saturdays when the
chickens had to be butchered and iced down for sale.
Wayne graduated from College High in 1958. He went on to work at the
Examiner-Enterprise and Cities Service before starting his 33-year career with
National Zinc, retiring in 2001. As Wayne tells it, he met the love of his life
Sharon Sanders at the Grace Epworth Methodist Church in Bartlesville, where on a
wagon ride he gave her a big kiss and asked her for a date on Saturday night.
The rest was history and they were united in marriage on February 5, 1960, in
Bartlesville. They made their home in Bartlesville and Ochelata before moving
the family to Copan to a house that had to be moved to the 4 mile road, its
former foundation now sits under the Copan Dam. After that home flooded out the
third time Wayne decided to build a beautiful home on higher ground nearby.
Wayne’s passions in life centered around family, hunting and fishing. He enjoyed
quail and duck, as well as squirrel hunting. Wayne and Sharon loved to spend
time together hunting for wild onions and taking care of grandbabies. He liked
to spend one-on-one time with his grandchildren; each one of them had their own
thing they would do together with him. Wayne gave all of them nicknames and on
more than one occasion forgot their real name. In later years he enjoyed cooking
and buying kitchen gadgets on QVC. He always fed the grandkids biscuits and
gravy before school and cooked big pots of spaghetti for them before playing
sports. Wayne loved his hummingbirds and had one particular bird that was really
mean to the other birds visiting the porch, so Wayne took a shot at it but
luckily missed. He enjoyed his cows and as it became harder for him to get out
to look after them, Wayne brought them into the front yard so he could keep an
eye on them.
Wayne is survived by his two sons, David Hawkins and Heather of Dewey, and Brent
Hawkins and Shyla of Copan; one brother Harry Hawkins and Karen of Clinton, IL;
seven grandchildren, Matt Hawkins and Samantha of Dewey, Shawn Hawkins and Jessi
of Copan, Brady Hawkins of Dewey, Kylee Hawkins of Copan, Cole Hawkins of
Bartlesville, Tel Hawkins of Copan, and Sydney Hawkins of Copan; six great
grandchildren, Gage, Reed, Finleigh, Ally, Lily and Cahner.
He is preceded in
death by, his loving wife Sharon, father Jerry Hawkins and Katy, Mother Goldie
Hardesty and Mugs, Uncle and Aunt Johnnie and Iris Steeley and three brothers.
Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9-1, Sunday 12-5 and Monday 9-12. In
