Merle was born in Springfield, MO and graduated from California High School
in California, MO. He attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX.
After receiving an honorable discharge from the United States Navy, he
earned a BA from Central Methodist College in Fayette, MO. Merle was named
as a member of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and
Colleges. He also received a Master's in Physics from the University of
Kansas. Merle spent his entire career as an employee of Phillips Petroleum
Co. in Bartlesville, working in the Physics Branch of the Research &
Development (R&D) Dept., the Geology Branch of the Exploration & Production
(E&P) Dept. and was Supervisor of the E&P Computing Section, R&D
Department.
Merle was a member of Bartlesville First United Methodist Church, where he
taught Sunday School classes. He and his wife, Fern, participated in a
monthly dinner bridge group for many years. Merle was athletic and active in
a variety of sports during college and throughout his life until his later
years. He enjoyed board and card games with family and friends and was a
crossword enthusiast. He was known for his wit and use of puns. Merle was a
member of Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society, Kappa Alpha, and the
Society of Exploration Geophysicists.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Fern Cartwright, and their children, daughter Karen Bowzer (husband, Jerry) and son Greg Cartwright (wife, Becca). He is also survived by step-granddaughter, Joanna Bowzer (husband, Nicholas) and grandsons Sean, Trevor, and Landon Cartwright.
