Jack Alonzo Jones, 78, of Dewey died Friday in Bartlesville.
Jack was born the son of Alonzo and Thelma (Topping) Jones on March 13, 1937, in Oglesby, OK. Thelma died when Jack was just 7 years old and Alonzo moved the family to Wyandotte St. in Dewey where Jack would make his home for most of his life. Jack loved playing sports and excelled at football, graduating from Dewey High School in 1955. He worked various jobs, including filling station and auto mechanic, which incorporated his love for cars.
In the summer of 1960, Shirley Nixon caught Jack’s eye and captured his heart. She was in Oklahoma attending Chilocco Indian School. Jack and Shirley were united in marriage on April 8, 1961, in Miami, OK, and enjoyed 54-plus years together. They lived in Bartlesville before moving to California for Jack to work with Shirley’s father a short while before returning to Dewey. Jack started his 32-year career with Reda Pump in 1967, retiring from Schlumberger in 1998. His son Dallas Jones preceded him in death in 2007.
Jacks had a love for people especially his extended family who reached out to him and cared for young Jack in his formative years following his mother’s death. Jack was a wonderful Dad and grandfather to his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Fraternal order of Eagles Aeire 610 since 1977. Fishing and hunting dogs were his passion for many years. But most of all Jack loved his family and spending quality time with them.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of the home Shirley J. Jones; one daughter Dee Ann Harris and David of Independence, KS; one brother Jerry Jones and Judy of Nowata; five grandchildren, Kendall Boyles and Randy, Jared Jones and Brandy, Nathan Harris and Kathleen, Samantha Harris, and Justin Jones; five great grandchildren, Kaylee, Aubrie, Brooklyn, Dallas and Jacee; mother in law Viola Haygood, sisters in law Linda and Jim Platt, Erma Sallie, brother in law Phillip Sprague, and his nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, one son Dallas Jones, one brother Jimmy Jones, and one sister Joan Sprague.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Journey Home, 3406 SE Kentucky St, Bartlesville, OK 74006.
Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015, at Dewey Cemetery, with Chaplin Mark Bright officiating. Services are under the direction of Carter Davis and the Davis Family Funeral Home. Online condolences and remembrances may be shared with Jack’s family at www.DavisFamilyFuneralHome.com
